Safed Musli Farming

Chlorophytum borivilianum, commonly known as Safed Musli, is a highly valuable medicinal crop widely used in Ayurvedic, Unani, and pharmaceutical industries. It is well known for its immunity-boosting and vitality-enhancing properties. Due to increasing domestic and export demand, Safed Musli farming has become a profitable short-duration commercial cultivation project.

  • Soil: Well-drained sandy loam soil

  • Land Preparation

  • Deep ploughing followed by 2–3harrowings
  • Application of 10–15 tons of Farm Yard Manure (FYM)
  • Preparation of raised beds for proper drainage
  • Removal of weeds and stones before planting
  • Planting Practices

Planting Material: Healthytubers(approximately 400–500 kg per acre)

Spacing: 30cm×15cm spacing is recommended.

Irrigation: Light irrigation immediately after planting and regular irrigation every 7–10 days depending on soil moisture. Avoid excessive irrigation.

Manuring & Fertilization: Organic manure and vermicompost are recommended. Bio- fertilizers help improve tuber growth.

Weed Management: 2–3 manual weedings during early growth stages. Mulching helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.

  • Harvesting & Processing

The crop is ready for harvest after 5–6 months when leaves turn yellow and dry. Tubers are carefully dug out, washed, peeled, and sun-dried for 3–4 days. Proper drying enhances quality and market value.
